Kashmir is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It has always been a favourite spot for people to come and admire the scenic beauty. Several movies that have been filmed here have only added to the popularity of his place that is often described as a ‘paradise on earth’; Kashmir is a true Himalayan paradise. It is a part of India that has been blessed with unparalleled natural beauty. Crystal blue skies, sparkling water ways and breathtaking vistas are all part of the Kashmir experience. Anantnag is the commercial and financial capital if the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a large business and trading centre. Anantnag is an ancient city that came into existence in 5000 BCE. This makes it one of the oldest urban settlements known to man. There are several tourist attractions in and around Anantnag. This town is also featured in every package that covers Kashmir as a tourist destination. There are several tourist attractions in and around Anantnag. They are the Martand Sun Temple, Aishmuqam Shrine, Chapel of John Bishop's Memorial Hospital, Masjid Baba Dawood Khaki, Masjid Syed Shab, Naghbal, Uma Devi of Uma Nagri, Ziarat Baba Hyder Reshi, Kherbawani Asthapan (Devibal) and Amarnath Cave. These attractions are visited by tourists who visit Kashmir. These tourist attractions in Anantnag reflect the many vicissitudes and experienced many upheavals from time to time. Anantnag is not only the rice bowl of the valley, it is also a very picturesque area.
 
How to Reach: 
 
By Air: there is no airport in Anantnag. The nearest airport is the Srinagar airport. The Sheikh ul Alam Airport, is the closest air base from Anantnag. This airport is 62 Kms from Anantnag and is well connected by road to all the major cities in the state. The Sheikh ul Alam Airport is well connected by flights from various parts of the country as well. Taxis are available to Anantnag from Srinagar.
 
By Rail: Even though there is a railway station in the Anantnag district, the city of Anantnag does not have a railway station. Jammu Tawi is the major railway station for the state and is well connected to Anantnag by road. Cabs are available from Jammu Tawi to Anantnag as well.
 
By Road: Anantnag is very well connected by road to all the major cities in the state. Jammu is 237 Kms from Anantnag and it takes around 4 hours to cover the distance. There are regular buses that ply the route also.
 
When to visit Anantnag: 
The district of Anantnag experiences pleasant weather for the most part of the year. Summers are considered to be most favourable season for visiting this place. This is because of the mild temperature of the region during the summer.
 
Sightseeing attractions in Anantnag: 
Anantnag is a very important religious site and there are several sites of religious significance. The place has several places of worship of all religions. Some of the places of tourist interest in Anantnag are Martand Sun Temple, Aishmuqam Shrine, Chapel of John Bishop's Memorial Hospital, Masjid Baba Dawood Khaki, Masjid Syed Shab, Naghbal, Uma Devi of Uma Nagri, Ziarat Baba Hyder Reshi, Kherbawani Asthapan (Devibal) and the Amarnath Cave. Some of these are in Anantnag and a few of these are away from Anantnag albeit at a short distance.
 
Amarnath Cave: The Amaranth cave is a site of religious significance for Hindus. It is a shrine to Lord Shiva. These caves are millennia old and have been visited even in ancient times. The main attraction here is the self formed Shivling that is formed entirely out of ice. It is believed that this is the place where Lord Shiva gave Parvathi the secrets of immortality and hence the name Amarnath which translates into `Immortal God`. This site can be visited only during a few months in a year and is an arduous trek.
 
Martand Sun Temple: This is an awe inspiring structure that was built in the 7th to 8th century AD and is dedicated to the sun god. It was built during the reign of King Lalitaditya. The temple is a very good example of the architecture of ancient times and also showcases the ability of the artisans. The temple also offers a panoramic view of the valley of Kashmir.
 
Masjid Syed Shab: The Masjid Syed Shab is a prominent tourist destination. It is situated in the base of Anichteep in Martand Plateau. The mosque was built in honour of Hazrat Syed Mohammed Inayat-ullah Qadri Samnani who came to Kashmir in 1528 A.D from the city named Shaman, located in the Central Asia. This is a sacred site for Muslims who visit this place on the 8th of Shaban which is the death anniversary of the saint.
  
Chapel of John Bishop's Memorial Hospital: The chapel is located beneath the grounds of John Bishop Memorial Hospital and was built for the benefit of the Christian officials and Protestant Christians, who demanded a separate praying ground. It is the only prayer ground for Christians in the region.
 
Naghbal: Naghbal is a very popular Hindu pilgrimage centre. There is a holy spring that rises from the base of a hillock. This site is used for worshipping Lord Vishnu. There is a dilapidated temple a short distance away from the site which is even today used for worshipping by Hindus. This complex also has a Gurudwara and houses a sulphur spring that is believed to cure several ailments.
 
Ziarat Baba Hyder Reshi: This is a popular mosque that is located in Danter Village. This place attracts people from all faiths and is a very good example of the secular nature of the people in the area.
 
Hotels and Accomodation in Anantnag: 
There are several hotels in and around Anantnag that offer accommodation to travelers with different budgetary requirements. Some of the hotels are Heevan Hotel, Grand Mumtaz Resort, Hotel Hill Park, Hotel Mountview, Hotel Maharaja Palace, Hotel Mantoo Cottages etc. some of the hotels are in Pahalgam and the area is easily accessible to the other parts of Pahalgam and is well connected by road.
 
Heevan Hotel: 
Hotel Heevan is located in Pahalgam on the banks of river Lidder, at an altitude of 2000 m above sea level amidst lush green pine forests and away from the chaos of the market. The resort offers 45 centrally heated rooms with all the facilities anyone could expect.

The Grand Mumtaz Resort is located in Pahalgam and boasts of a nine-hole golf course. The hotel has all modern amenities and well furnished rooms. The dining provided is also par excellence.
