Kottayam is one of the 14 districts in the state of Kerala, India. Kottayam is bordered by the haughty Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of Kuttanad on the west. The bird sanctuary is situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a world renowned bird sanctuary and an ornithologist’s paradise. The bird sanctuary in Kumarakom is spread across 14 acres and obviously has an interesting variety of birdlife. The central attractions in the sanctuary are local birds like the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, darter, Brahminy kite and the duck, as well as the migratory Siberian crane. Parrot, teal, lark, fly catcher and other birds are also seen in sanctuary at some stage in their respective migratory seasons. Several of the migratory birds approach from the Himalayas and a few from far away Siberia. The most remarkable occasion in the sanctuary is the time when Siberian Cranes visit this sanctuary.

Vagamon is a hill station located in Kottayam- Idukki border of Kerala. Vennimala is the tranquil and beautiful hill top destination located in Kottayam which is popularly known as the Akshara Nagari.   Vennimala is placed just about 15 Kms away from the Kottayam town and can be accessed easily through the Kottayam- Kumuly road. The major attractions at Vennimala are its age old Lord Sri Rama and Lakshmana temple. Vennimala is bounded by lush green vegetation and rubber plantation at large. It is considered that Vennimala in medieval ages was populated by tribal communities.

Vennimala is a composed and attractive set located in the Puthuppalli village and have drawn the attraction of lots tourists both from inside and outside India. Vennimala in very old days was a thick forest. It is supposed that Lord Rama and Lakshmana during their stage of exile visited this hillside. At that moment lots of sages meditated in the caves of Vennimala. The place Vennimala came to be named ‘Vijayadri’ in Sanskrit and the name patently means that ‘hill of victory’ as Lakshmana won the combat with demons. Upon the plea of the sages Lakshmana killed lots of demons who were a danger and trouble to the sages. Vijayadri in Malayalam turned out to be Vennimala.

Sree Rama Lakshamana Perumal Temple in Vennimala is considered as one among the oldest Rama Temples in South India. The temple celebrates twenty Eight days of annual festival each year. The temple is on a hill 1500 feet high from sea level. It is considered that Vennimala was once the Capital of Thekkumkoor Kingdom. Vennimala is preferred spot among the tourists since it is a hill station.


Alapra is a settlement village in southeast area of Kottayam district with a distance of 45 km from Kottayam town. The location is near to Manimala junction and Erumeli which is a well known Hindu pilgrim destination. Ponthanpuzha Forest-Alapra is really a picturesque place with forests all around. Alapra is surrounded by 2500 acre forest called Ponthanpuzha. Pathiramanal is a small but beautiful island located in the backwaters of the Vembanad Lake which is placed 16km away from Kottayam. Pathiramanal is a small island situated on the border of Kottayam - Allapuzha Districts in Kerala, India. The name 'Pathiramanal' means 'Sands of night'. The island is placed on the bank of the Vembanad Lake. It takes around 40 minutes from Kumarakom to reach Pathiramanal. The nearest airports are the Cochin International Airport which is just about 85 km north of Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram which is about 150 km towards the south. Alappuzha is the nearest railway station to reach at Pathiramanal.
