Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal which is situated just 25 km from Kalpetta and just 3 km from Ambalavayal in the Wayanad district of Kerala. Edakkal Caves lie 1,200 meters above sea level on Ambukutty Mala. The captivating prehistoric rock etchings found on the walls of these caves have drawn the serious notice of archeologists and historians internationally. The Edakkal Cave   is 96ft long, 22ft wide and 30ft high cleft shaped by the vertical split of a rocky mountain.

The name Edakkal factually means a stone in between, and this explains how the cave is shaped by a deep rock straddling a crack in the rock. The local myth portrays that the caves were created by arrows fired by Lava and Kusha, the sons of Sri Rama, renowned hero of the Ramayana. In 1984, State Archeology department took over Edakkal caves and declared it as a protected monument. Today it is a center for lots of tourists, students and researchers. Edakkal Caves is situated at 4000 meters above sea level.

There are human and animal figures carvings on the rock walls depicting pre-historic period and civilized people. These carvings speak of an exceedingly civilized people of pre-historic age. Archaeologists believe the site as one of the earliest centers of human habitation. The caves can be reached by 1km trekking trail starting from Edakkal. Tourists require indulging in a one and half hour long trek to arrive at the entrance of the caves. This cave is also an outstanding trekking spot.

Kuruva Island  

Kuruva Island, locally known as Kuruvadweep, is located on the banks of Kabani River in Wayanad District, Kerala on a stretch of 900 acres which is a sheltered reserve forest full of rare species of birds, monkeys and valuable trees.   Kuruva Island is rich in flora and fauna. Banasura Sagar Dam
The Banasura Sagar Dam is positioned 21 km from Kalpetta, Wayanad. The Banasura Sagar Dam is considered as the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The Banasura Dam is built across Karamanathodu, a tributary of the Kabani River. The dam is part of the Banasura Sagar Project that is intended at supplementing the Kakkayam Hydro-electric project, and to provide drinking water and irrigation facilities to the area. The backdrop of the Banasura Hill makes the dam a heaven on earth. The dam is dotted by a cluster of small, green islands. Boating is a preferred activity here. Soochipara Falls

Soochipara Falls also recognized as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a spectacular three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad. It is surrounded by evergreen and tropical forests. The name Soochipara is a blend of two words such as "Soochi" which means   "Needle" and "Para" that means "Rock". Surrounded by huge hills and dense forests, Soochipara Falls is situated from a height of 100 feet to 300 feet. Soochipara Waterfalls is located at a distance of 22 km from Kalpetta.

Rivers in Wayanad

Kabani River - The Kabani, also called as Kapila, is a river of southern India which originates in Wayanad District of Kerala state.  The River Kabani is one of the three East flowing rivers originated in Kerala. Approximately the whole Wayanad district is drained by Kabani and its three tributaries, the Panamaram, Mananthavady, and Kalindy rivers. The backwaters of the Kabani reservoir are very rich in wildlife mainly in summer when the water level recedes to shape rich grassy fields. 55 acres of Nagarole National Park of Karnataka is located on the banks of Kabani River. The Kabani River is a preferred tourists spot due to fantastic sightings of large groups of elephants, abundant green landscape, and a large picturesque lake.

Mananthavady River – It is also known as Mananthavady Puzha. The river is a tributary of the Kabani River in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India.   

Panamaram River - Panamaram River formerly known as Niravil Puzha.  Panamaram River originates from Pakramthalam hills. One branch of the Panamaram River starts from the Banasura Sagar reservoir   and the other branch of the river begin from Lakkidi hills.
Kalindy River- Kalindy River is situated between Kabani reservoir and Kuruva Island.  Kalindy River joins Kabani. Kalindy River derives from Brahmagiri hills.

Papanashini Stream or Bavali Puzha- Papanashini Stream is a mountain stream with crystal clean water. The Papanashini River’s downward stream is popularly recognized as Bavali Puzha. Kerala's renowned Thirunelly Temple is sited adjacent to this natural watercourse.  

Wildlife in Wayanad

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary- Muthanga wildlife sanctuary can be found in Muthanga which is situated around 18 km from Sulthan Batherry. This place is acknowledged as Project Elephant Area. Home to diverse species of plants and animals, Muthanga wraps an area of 345 sq km. Located very near to Karnataka border, this thick green forest is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.  The major animals found here are Elephants, Leopards, Gaur, Sambar, Cheetah, Barking Deer, Hanuman Langur, Slender Loris and a small population of Tigers.

Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary-Pakshipathalam bird sanctuary is sited in the Brahmagiri hills which could be found just 7 km towards Thirunelly Temple. . Pakshipathalam is home to numerous species of birds and is an ornithologist’s paradise.

Tholpetty Wild Life Sanctuary- Tholpetty wild life sanctuary is also identified as Begur wildlife sanctuary which is located at the border of Karnataka state and just 20 km away from Mananthavady. There is several plant species found here which has lofty medicinal values.  It has a huge range of bird species as well as animals, such as, deer, tigers, elephants, leopards, boars, etc.

The Begur Wildlife Sanctuary- It is situated 20 km away from Mananthavady in Wayanad. The Begur Wildlife Sanctuary is home to numerous species of animals including elephants, deer, tigers, boars, leopards, etc. A variety of birds can also find in this sanctuary. The dense forest that covers the sanctuary has a wealth of herbs with high medicinal value.

Pazhassi Tomb-Pazhassi Tomb is located approximately 32 km away from Kalpetta and 42 km away from Bathery. The memorial of the 'Lion of Kerala’ Veera Pazhassi Raja, who organized the guerilla warfare against the British East India Company, is situated at Mananthavady. The Pulpally cave is where Pazhassi took shelter until he was captured by the British. He is remembered for his courage and boldness. In remembrance of him, his mortal remains were laid to rest in the Pazhassi Raja tomb.  He was burned in 1805 after the conflict against British East India Company.

Pazhassi Tomb is a simple but gorgeous tomb built in Mananthavady. He carried out guerilla type warfare attacks against British and carried out a long tenure of revolution against British. Pazhassi Raja is considered to be the last king who revolted against the British after the death of Tipu Sultan. There is a cave by name Pulpally cave near Pazhassi tomb. The point of burial of Pazhassi raja is where the Pazhassi tomb was built as a memorial for him. Adjacent to Pazhassi tomb is the Pazhassi museum which has a sword that is supposed to be from Pazhassi era.

The tomb is situated around at 700m above from the sea level. The Tomb of Pazhassi Raja is a significant heritage spot. There is an underground museum that has many articles belonging to the Raja and his times.
